In May, the training sessions at the Emerging Leaders School (ELS) were carried out online. In total, 12 training sessions were held covering 6 different topics. Apart from the trainings, during May, a number of Space for Discussion series were organized by the ELS participants. This is an additional opportunity for them to meet the experts of different fields as well as the representatives of public and private sectors. The participants choose the discussion topic themselves and have an opportunity to get the answers to the questions of their interest from the invited professionals and decision-makers.

In April, the training sessions at the Emerging Leaders School (ELS) were carried out within the mixed format – online as well as live. In total, 16 training sessions were held covering 7 different topics.

In March, #ELS trainings moved offline and were held as live meetings. This gave the participants an opportunity for networking with each other as well as with the trainers. ELS Diaries are coming back! This year too, we will publish a monthly digest for the Emerging Leaders School ELS2021 overviewing and summarizing all the activities taking place during the month.

This year, the second edition of #ELS – ELS2021 – opened online in all four target locations – Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Tbilisi and Gori. Due to the epidemic situation, all the training sessions in January and February took place online as well. ELS participants receive e-tasks from the trainers, which they prepare online in the following week individually as well as in groups. The participants then discuss their completed work during the online training sessions. In the following edition of the ELS diaries, we will review the topics covered through the program in April in Tbilisi and three different regions of Georgia – Kvemo Kartli, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, and Adjara. In April, the training program covered 5 topics and 12 sessions were conducted overall.

In April Space for Discussion events were held in Zugdidi and Batumi. A local perspective – impact of Covid-19 on Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti and Adjara regions – was the first topic that the invited representatives from governmental, non-governmental, and medical sectors discussed together.

The key speakers of the Zugdidi discussion were: Aleksandre Motserelia – governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region; Malkhaz Jalaghonia – doctor at “Evex” and “Kuratio” clinics; Nana Odisharia – epidemiologist, director at Zugdidi Municipality Public Health Center; Khatuna Betchvaia – director at non-Governmental Organization “Tanaziari”. [Read the overview of the meeting here]

The key speakers of the discussion conducted in Batumi the following day were: Mamuka Berdzenishvili – executive director at the Tourism Institute; Paata Aroshidze – professor at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Faculty of Economics and Business; Tamar Kaikatsishvili – deputy chairperson at the Department of Tourism and Resorts of Ajara Autonomous Republic; Davit Murvanidze – clinical manager of Batumi Hospital for Infectious Diseases; Vakhtang Gvelebiani – Chief specialist of the department for coordination of regional projects at Guria Municipality.

In February 2020, Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP) launched its “Emerging Leaders School” (ELS) in four different cities of Georgia – Tbilisi, Rustavi, Batumi, and Zugdidi.  The initiative is being implemented within the framework of the project “Promoting Youth Transformational Leaders in Georgia” by Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP) with the financial support of USAID/Georgia and in partnership with CRRC Georgia. The project aims at raising youth awareness on political processes and democratization as well as developing their leadership skills and enhancing their participation and representation in public life.

The ELS targets 18-35-year-olds with diverse backgrounds from Tbilisi and three different regions of Georgia – Kvemo Kartli, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, and Adjara. Interesting and diverse training program of the ELS covers a wide array of topics such as public policy, challenges of foreign affairs, social and political campaigns, women’s political participation, civic activism, etc. Moreover, the project provides an opportunity for the participants to share their views with the politicians, experts, and leaders through open discussions and participation in the Youth Democracy Forum.

A series of training sessions, which take place every second weekend, twice a month started in February. However, starting from March 21, due to the spread of the Covid-19 GIP decided to carry out the training sessions of the Emerging Leader’s School online. ELS participants receive e-tasks from the trainers, which they prepare online in the following week individually as well as in groups. The participants then discuss their completed work during the online training sessions.
