Prof. Kornely Kakachia, Director of the Georgian Institute of Politics, participated in the public discussion “Georgia and Moldova at the Ballot Box: What Impact on EU Integration and Enlargement Process?” The Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies organized the event with financial support from the European Parliament.
Following the crucial elections in Moldova and Georgia, the event addressed the key implications of their results for both countries’ paths toward EU integration and their internal challenges at the democratic and societal levels. In Moldova, the outcome of the presidential election and the EU membership referendum will be pivotal in determining the country’s direction, with Russia actively seeking to destabilize its pro-European ambitions. In Georgia, polarisation has intensified before and after the parliamentary elections, and the political climate is becoming increasingly hostile to democratic institutions. The government’s repressive measures, such as the controversial “foreign agents” law, mirror Russian tactics, threatening civil society, media freedom, and the integrity of election monitoring.
This post-election event explored how the election results in the two countries will impact their European path, focused on the risks of Russian interference, and analyzed the broader implications of the elections for the EU enlargement strategy.
