Online discussion: Establishing an Eastern Climate Partnership: Lessons from EU-Georgia Cooperation on Climate Change

On 13 July, 2020 Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP) in partnership with the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) hosted an online discussion “Establishing an Eastern Climate Partnership: Lessons from EU-Georgia Cooperation on Climate Change”. The online event, which took place using the online platform Zoom, was held in the framework of the GIP-CEPS joint discussion series ‘EaP Beyond 2020’ reflecting on future prospects of the Eastern Partnership program.

The discussion gathered more than 40 participants, including but not limited to the representatives of civil society, academia, expert groups and public officials. Online panel was moderated by Dr. Irina Kustova, Researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS).

The discussion was opened by Kornely Kakachia, Director of Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP) and Michael Emerson, Associate Senior Research Fellow at the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS)/the Leader of 3DCFTAs project.  

During the discussion, Bram De Botselier, Academic Assistant at College of Europe presented the findings of his policy paper – “Establishing an Eastern Climate Partnership to Enhance Global Ambition: Lessons from EU-Georgia Cooperation on Climate Change”.

Ms. Šarūnė Kubiliūtė, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to Georgia discussed EU-Georgia cooperation on climate change, while Ms. Maia Tskhvaradze, Acting Head of the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia focused on Georgia’s commitments and harmonization process under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement.

The presentations were followed by the Q&A session allowing the participants of the online event for more engagement in the discussion.
