On January 23, Salome Kandelaki, a Policy analyst at the Georgian Institute of Politics, moderated the presentation of the book “Security Dynamics in the Black Sea Region” at the College of Europe in Natolin.
The event featured a keynote presentation by one of the authors of the book Dr. Stefan Meister, Head of the Center for Order and Governance in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia at the DGAP.
This book examines the geopolitical shifts triggered by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine from February 2022 onwards. This conflict has catalyzed unprecedented transformations in the Black Sea region’s security landscape, reshaping the foundations of international relations. Presenting various case studies on key players such as Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Turkey, the European Union, and NATO, the book comprehensively analyzes the multifaceted impacts stemming from the conflict, focusing on three critical dimensions: military, economic, and human security. The contributions examine whether and how the conflict has magnified security challenges and spurred resistance by Ukrainian forces and society. It also discusses the impact of comprehensive economic sanctions and Western military and financial assistance to Ukraine on Russia’s military capabilities and regional balance of power.
The book presentation stimulated discussion among the students, academics, and other interested stakeholders about the significance of the Black Sea Security not only for the Black Sea regional actors but also for the other international players like the EU, NATO, US, and China, as well as about new BS strategy of the EU.
The discussion was structured around the following questions:
- How has the Russia-Ukraine conflict reshaped the Black Sea region’s security landscape and the broader European geopolitical order?
- To what extent have Western sanctions, military aid, and multilateral efforts impacted Russia’s capabilities and the conflict’s trajectory?
- What are the long-term implications of the war on human security, governance, and multilateral cooperation in the region?
